Akita cops: Woman found dead, grandmother missing

AKITA (TR) – Akita Prefectural Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of the body of a 22-year-old woman whose grandmother is missing, reports the Nikkan Sports (Dec. 2).

At around noon on Friday, Akio Sasaki, 77, found the body of his granddaughter, Asuka, collapsed face-up at the bottom of the stairs inside the residence they share in Odate City. As well, his wife, Akiko, 73, was nowhere to be found.

Officers from the Odate Police Station arriving at the scene determined that Asuka had been strangled to death. A note found on a table read suggested that Akiko had killed her granddaughter and was planning to take her own life.

According to the Sankei Shimbun (Dec. 2), a vehicle belonging to Akiko was found at a lake about 3.5 kilometers from the residence. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

Asuka had moved into the residence about two weeks before. At around 6:30 a.m., the couple at breakfast with their granddaughter. Thereafter, Akio went for a walk. Upon his return, he made the grisly discovery.
