KANAGAWA (TR) – A male inmate at a detention center in Yokohama has died, it was learned on Sunday, reports TV Asahi (Nov. 27).

At around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, a security guard at the Yokohama Detention Center found the inmate, aged in his 40s, to be behaving strangely.

The inmate was then transported to a medical office at the center, where he was found to be losing consciousness and experiencing a weakening pulse.

About 30 minutes later, the man was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was confirmed dead on Saturday evening.

When the man was handed over to the center by the Kanagawa Prefectural Police, he was observed to have swelling throughout his body. He was scheduled to undergo medical treatment and an examination.

“We believe that the response was appropriate,” a representative of the center is quoted. “Regarding the health care management of inmates, we would like to pay sufficient attention.”
