AOMORI (TR) – A supermarket was engulfed in flames in Aomori City on Sunday, taking firefighters three hours to extinguish after two workers were hospitalized.

Authorities responded to reports of flames breaking out from the “Toubu Shokuin Ichiba” eastern food market at around 9:30 a.m., Fuji News Network reports (Nov. 27).

The two workers were hospitalized with symptoms of hyperventilation, authorities said, adding no other injuries were reported, according to Nippon News Network.

Television footage showed towering plumes of smoke spewing from the supermarket that started to fall apart as firefighters wielding water cannons fought to control the raging blaze.

Nearby residents reported hearing what sounded like gas tanks exploding, TV Asahi reported.

People inside the store were able to evacuate in time, a witness said.

Another witness said they saw “some small flames with lots smoke billowing from the building at first before the flames suddenly got intense.”
