TOKYO (TR) – A woman died after she tried saving her mother when their house in Edogawa Ward caught fire, police said on Saturday.

Toshiko Ono, 67, a kindergarten principal, died at a hospital from smoke inhalation the morning after she tried to save her 94-year-old mother who was inside their two-story home that caught fire at around 10 p.m. on Friday, TBS News reports (November 26).

Ono, who lived with her mother and four family members, escaped from their home when the fire broke out but went back inside for her mother, police said.

Firefighters later rescued Ono’s mother who was uninjured, police said, adding the cause of the fire is under investigation.
