OKAYAMA (TR) – One man was apprehended on Friday in what was likely a gang-related shooting at a gas station in Tsuyama City, police have announced.

At around 4:10 p.m., police responding to an emergency call about “a shooting incident” at the gas station, located in the Showamachi area, arrived to find Shoji Io, a 63-year-old former gang member from Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, standing at the scene wielding a single gun, the Asahi Shimbun reports (Nov. 25).

Io was arrested on the spot on suspicion of violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law, police said.

In the shooting, the suspect fired a single shot at a man believed to be a member of the Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi organized crime group, police said. Though the bullet missed, the presumed gang member suffered a minor shoulder injury.

Police are now investigating whether to charge Io with attempted murder.
