TOKYO (TR) – An elderly driver caused a three-car collision that sent 12 people including four children to the hospital, police said on Monday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said the male 75-year-old driver collided with a car that was waiting to turn right, which forced the waiting car into an oncoming car, at an intersection in Hachioji City at around 5 p.m., Nippon News Network reports (Nov. 21).

Four children ranging from 2 to 9 and eight adults ranging from 30 to 60 were hospitalized with injuries, police said.

The three-car collision comes amid a spate of notable traffic incidents involving elderly drivers.

On November 12, an 83-year-old woman hit and killed two pedestrians at a hospital parking lot in Tokyo after mistaking the accelerator for the brake.

Also in Tokyo, a male driver in his 80s careened over a parking block and smashed into a convenience store before asking for cigarettes.
