TOKYO (TR) – Five people were hospitalized after inhaling fumes from a fire that broke out in a stairwell, the second in a series of fires that took place in close proximity which could be serial arson, police said on Sunday.

A fire broke out in the stairwell on the fourth floor of a building at around 3 a.m. in Adachi Ward, before another fire was reported in the corridor of a building 100 meters away where items such as a television set and clothes were set alight, Nippon News Network reports (November 6).

Five people were hospitalized after inhaling fumes in the building 100 meters away, police said, adding that another fire was reported at 6:30 a.m. after smoke was spotted nearby which came from burning cardboard.

Police are investigating whether these incidents are related cases of arson since they took place in the same general area in locations that aren’t particularly prone to fires.
