CHIBA (TR) – A man suspected in the illicit filming of a woman was found collapsed with broken bones in a bungled escape attempt that began after he snuck past a snoozing officer during questioning, police said on Saturday.

Police officers were questioning a 30-year-old man suspected of attempting to film up the skirt of a woman with a camera at a tourist site in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture, when he slipped out of the interrogation room while a 40-year-old officer took a nap on October 22, NHK reports (November 5).

Two officers were in the room, but one left to draft papers, leaving the suspect alone with the snoozing officer.

The suspect snuck out of the unlocked room and slipped through the window of a bathroom onto stairs outside, and was found collapsed shortly afterward at a school about 250 meters away. He had fractured bones by jumping from the school’s roof, police said.

The suspect will be questioned after he recovers in the hospital, police said.

The officer who took a nap was quoted by police as saying he “ended up getting drowsy,” and is now being investigated for improper conduct.

The Chiba Prefectural Police Headquarters said in a statement that it “hopes to prevent future occurrences through stricter instruction.”
