SHIZUOKA (TR) – A 54-year-old man who illegally uploaded a copy of hit animated film “Kimi No Na Wa” was referred to prosecutors to face formal charges, Shizuoka Prefectural Police said on Friday.
The suspect, who is unemployed and living ing Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was referred to public prosecutors for allegedly violating the copyright law by uploading a copy of the animated film “Kimi No Na Wa” online using his own computer sometime in September, Nippon News Network reports (Nov. 4).
The suspect, who has been charged with violating the Copyright Act, admits to the allegations, police said.
Copyright owner and production company Toho, which also handles Studio Ghibli’s films, said in a statement that it has “strong expectations that this will stop online copyright infringement.”
“Kimi No Na Wa,” a box-office hit released earlier this year, is centered on a teenage boy living in Tokyo and a teenage girl living in a mountain village, enchanting viewers of all ages with its cinematic visuals and charming story that have drawn many comparisons to Hayao Miyazaki’s works under Studio Ghibli.
