TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested an organized crime member for allegedly collecting welfare payments while concealing his affiliation, reports TV Asahi (Oct. 31).

Between October of last year and September, Kenji Ogawa, a member of an affiliate gang of the Yamaguchi-gumi, collected a total of three million yen in welfare payments from the government office of Chofu City while not disclosing that he is a gang member.

The suspect admits to the allegations.

According to police, Ogawa was excommunicated by his gang in 2009, five years before he submitted his initial application for welfare at the government office, according to TBS News (Nov. 1). Following his reinstatement with the gang in September of last year, however, the suspect continued to receive payments.
