Tokyo cops nab man suspected in series of thefts of high-end bicycles

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 53-year-old man suspected in a series of thefts of high-end bicycles that were later sold online, reports TBS News (Oct. 15).

In March of last year, Tsutomu Maeda allegedly stole a bicycle, valued at approximately 250,000 yen, near JR Ikebukuro Station in Toshima Ward. He later sold it on an auction site.

Maeda, who has been charged with , admits to the allegations. “I did it for money,” the suspect is quoted by police. “In stealing a high-end bicycle, the thrill of the chase brightens my mood.”

The matter came to light after the victim saw the stolen bicycle on an auction site eight months after the theft and informed police.

During a search of Maeda’s residence, police found around 50 bicycle parts, including seats and handle bars, according to Nippon News Network (Oct. 15). Police are now investigating the suspect’s possible involvement in the theft of other bicycles that were later sold online.
