IBARAKI (TR) – Police arrested a married couple on Tuesday in Hitachi City for allegedly threatening a school principal with a knife while demanding another undokai, or sports day, be held because their child was unable to participate in the first one.

Toshiaki Nabatame, 50, and Yukiko Nabatame, 49, were arrested on suspicion of carrying out violent acts by threatening the principle of their son’s school and two teachers at their residence on Sunday with a knife, the Sankei Shimbun reports (October 6).

Toshiaki is denying the charges while Nabatame has admits to them, police said.

“Hold another sports day,” the suspects were quoted by the Hitachi Police Station as telling the school staff.

The couple made several requests to postpone the school’s sports day that was held on Sunday, police said.

The family’s child was for some reason unable to participate in the sports day, which the school refused to delay, leading police to believe the couple could have become enraged.
