TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have apprehended a British male after a bomb scare at a bank near JR Shibuya Station caused chaos on Friday afternoon, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Oct. 7).

At around 1:20 p.m., the man entered Mizuho Bank and dropped a duffle bag. A security guard then informed him that he “had dropped something.” The man replied, “Bomb! Bomb!”

After being tipped off by the guard about “a foreigner carrying something suspicious,” officers from the Shibuya Police Station arriving at the bank and found the man and the bag, which was later confirmed to contain a computer game, mobile phone and clothes but no explosive device.

During the incident, staff members and customers were sent into a panic, and took refuge outside. Police later cordoned off the area in front of the bank, according to TV Asahi (Oct. 7).

An identification card in possession of the man showed him to be British. He is now undergoing questioning over the matter.

Update: Police arrested Jaspreet Hunjan, 27, on charges of interference with a person’s duties, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Oct. 7).
