TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metroolitan Police have arrested a 64-year-old man living in the mountains suspected in a series of robberies in Akiruno City, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 16).

On July 18 at 8:20 a.m., Teruhisa Hino allegedly forced his way into the residence of a woman, aged in her 60s, and demanded money while holding a knife up to her. Before fleeing the scene, the suspect took 8,000 yen in cash and four tickets for the purchase of rice.

Several months ago, Hino began living in the mountains. “When I run out of money, I descend the mountain and commit a robbery,” the suspect is quoted by police in admitting to the allegations.

On September 6, police first apprehended Hino for possession of a knife — a violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law — as he walked through the mountains. He was subsequently linked to the crime involving the woman via boot prints left behind at the residence.

Police believe Hino has been behind a number of similar robberies that have taken place in the same area.
