Senior Oita cop held for stealing man’s smartphone ‘to make him suffer’

OITA (TR) – A senior police officer was arrested for stealing a smartphone from a man at a pachinko parlor in Nakatsu City, Asahi Shimbun reported (September 9).

Kenshiro Ohara, 30, was arrested on suspicion of theft after the pachinko parlor manager called police after the suspect started arguing with the man who returned to retrieve his smartphone he left behind at around 5 p.m. on Thursday, the Usa Station police said.

Ohara admitted to the charges, telling responding officers he “suddenly thought of doing it because I wanted to make him suffer. I never thought it would become this big of a deal.”

The stolen smartphone was found in Ohara’s private car, which was packed in the pachinko parlor’s parking lot, police him as saying.

Genzo Murakami, police chief of the Usa Police Station, said in a statement he “offers a deep apology to the citizens of the prefecture for a police officer to be arrested for committing a crime.”
