MATSUSAKA, Mie (TR) – A baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached was found among the bushes in a supermarket parking lot here on Saturday, police said.

Matsusaka police said the abandoned baby was rushed to a hospital after his cries led a passerby to find him at around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday, and was reported by doctors to be in stable condition with no injuries, TV Asahi reports (September 10).

Authorities believe the baby, who was found naked with his umbilical cord attached, is no more than a week old.

Police are investigating charges against the mother for abandoning the child.
