IBARAKI (TR) – Ibaraki Prefectural Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of human bones in a grove of trees in Bando City, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 11).

At around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday,  a 66-year-old man from Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture out picking chestnuts discovered what appeared to be a human skull.

Officers from the Sakai Police Station arriving at the scene the following day, confirmed the discovery as being that of a human skull and found other human bones buried at more than 10 centimeters beneath the surface at a location nearby. Given that all the bones had become skeletal, it is believed that the person died some time ago.

The grove of trees is surrounded by rice paddies. It is not considered a place frequented by visitors.

Police are now working to identify the body. They are investigating the case on suspicion of abandoning a corpse.
