TOKYO (TR) – An anti-organized crime division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police has arrested three Taiwanese nationals for allegedly smuggling more than 100 kilograms of stimulant drugs concealed inside lighting fixtures into Japan from China, reports Fuji News Network (Sept. 5).

On July 7, a ship containing 154 kilograms of stimulant drugs (with an estimated street value of 10.78 billion yen) arrived aboard a ship at a wharf in Koto Ward. The vessel originated in China’s Guangdong Province.

Tokyo Customs officials later found the drugs inside 1,300 small packets that had been concealed in LED lighting fixtures. The contraband was then delivered to a warehouse in Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture.

On July 24, police arrested Ko Yu-shuen, 23, and two other Taiwanese nationals after they exited the warehouse. They had a total of five kilograms of the contraband in their possession.

All three suspects, who have been accused of Stimulants Control Law regarding importation for money-making purposes, deny the allegations, telling police that they were simply involved in the unloading of the cargo.
