TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested an organized crime member for allegedly collecting welfare payments while concealing his affiliation, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 30).

Between January of last year and this past May, Yoshihisa Shibuya, a member of the Inagawa-kai, collected a total of 3.5 million yen in welfare payments from the government office of Suginami Ward while not disclosing that he is a gang member.

The suspect admits to the allegations.

The matter came to light in January after police arrived at the Shibuya’s residence to mediate a fight he was having with his son. During the incident, his son told police about the welfare payments the suspect had been receiving. An investigation into the matter revealed him to be a gang member.
