Fukushima (TR) – A bear escaped from a boar trap in the town of Koori and seriously injured two people on Friday, the Sankei Shimbun reported (Aug. 26).

At around 8:40 a.m., a bear attacked a 23-year-old male city official and a 69-year-old male hunter who were in the mountains of the Matsubara area after a citizen reported that the animal had been caught in a boar trap.

The bear had managed to free itself from the trap by the time the pair arrived at the scene, officers from the Fukushima North Station Police said.

The pair suffered serious injuries to the head and face, police said.

Officers are on patrol for the roughly one-meter-tall bear that fled into the forest and warning citizens to be careful.

The pair was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.
