HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police have arrested a 60-year-old man after the body of an acquaintance was found in a residence in Iwamizawa City, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 24).

At 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Toru Takahashi arrived at the Hakodatenishi Police Station and told officers that “an incident has occurred.” Police subsequently visited a residence in the Kurisawacho area and found the body of Toshihiro Umetsu, 52, collapsed face-down in the living room. He was bleeding from his head.

Police also found a hammer at the scene, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun (Aug. 24). It is speculated that the tool was used to repeatedly beat the victim in the head.

Takahashi was arrested on Wednesday on charges of abandoning a corpse. Police are now investigating whether to also apply murder charges to the suspect.
