AICHI (TR) – Aichi Prefectural Polive have arrested a 48-year-old truck driver for allegedly stabbing his son to death due to his failure to study for an examination, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Aug. 23).

At approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday, Kengo Satake allegedly used a kitchen knife to stab his son Ryota, 12, in the right side of his chest inside the residence they share in Nagoya’s Kita Ward. He was confirmed dead about one hour later due to loss of blood.

Satake, who has been charged with attempted murder, denies the allegations, though he was quoted by police as saying, “I stabbed him because he did not study.” According to NHK (Aug. 21), the suspect claims to have committed the act in error.

Ryota was in his final year of elementary school. He had been preparing for an entrance examination for a junior high school in Nagoya.

The boy’s mother, who also lives in the residence, was out at the time of the incident.

Police are now investigating whether to change the charge against the suspect to murder.
