TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a former assembly candidate in the sexual assault of a woman in Shinjuku Ward, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 12).

At 4:00 a.m. on Friday, Rikuto Inotsume, 41, allegedly approached the woman, aged in her 20s, from behind on a road and dragged her down. He then climbed atop her and fondled the lower half of her body.

According to Sports Hochi (Aug. 12), the woman suffered minor injuries to her right shoulder.

Inotsume, who has been charged with indecent assault, denies the charges, telling officers from the Shinjuku Police Station that he does not recall the incident.

During the alleged assault, the woman let out a scream. Police working on a separate case nearby heard the woman and apprehended Inotsume upon arrival at the scene.

In April of last year, Inotsume ran for an assembly post in Kita Ward as a member of the Democratic Party of Japan. He was not elected.
