TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have seized a crossbow and other items belonging to a 68-year-old man suspected in the Molotov cocktail attack at a festival on Sunday evening in Suginami Ward that left more than a dozen persons injured. The man was later found dead in what is being treated as a suicide, reports TBS News (Aug. 8).
On Monday, police searched the man’s home, located in the Kugayama area, and found a crossbow, drone and 10 bottles filed with liquid.
According to the Takaido Police Station, the man began throwing bottles filled with liquid from his third-floor residence onto the street during the Fujimioka Tanabata Matsuri at around 7:30 p.m. The man threw a total of six bottles, which burst into fire upon impact with the street. A fire crew extinguished the blazes about 90 minutes later.
A total of 15 male and female revelers, aged between 1 and 47, suffered injuries, including burns to their hands and feet. None of the injuries are considered serious.
A male neighbor is quoted as saying that the man found the annual festival, which features samba dancing, to be “noisy.”
After the fires were extinguished, the body of the man was found hanged inside his residence. He was confirmed dead early Monday morning, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun (Aug. 9).
