MIYAGI (TR) – Miyagi Prefectural Police have arrested a 27-year-old man in a stabbing incident at JR Sendai Station that left an 18-year-old school girl with light injuries, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 5).

At around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, an unknown assailant stabbed the girl in the back with a pointed object as she waited for a Tohoku Line train. At first, the girl thought someone hit her but a person nearby indicated that she was bleeding from behind.

The girl was transported to a nearby hospital. Her wounds are not considered serious.

A examination of surveillance camera footage revealed a man, attired in a short-sleeve shirt and sandals, committing the crime and fleeing the scene. At approximately 2:00 p.m. that same day, police apprehended Munehito Aoyama at JR Rifu Station, located about 12 kilometers from the crime scene.

The suspect was in possession of two knives. “I threw away an awl,” the suspect is quoted by police in referring to what is believed to have been the weapon. He has admitted to stabbing the girl.
