TOKYO (TR) – A former presenter for public broadcaster NHK has been accused of evading taxes on more than 20 million yen in income garnered overseas, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 5).

According to a special investigation department at the Tokyo District Court, Ichiro Tatsumi, a 59-year-old former lecturer on an English conversation program, evaded taxes on 26 million yen in royalties obtained via copyright fees for English study books he wrote.

The money was deposited into a bank account in the United States. It was then used to purchase an investment trust and real estate.

According to a person with knowledge of the matter, Tatsumi claims that he filed the proper paperwork and paid taxes in the U.S., reports Nippon News Network (Aug. 4).
