TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of the body of an elderly woman inside her residence in Nishi-Tokyo City, reports TBS News (Aug. 4).

At 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, a neighbor alerted police after finding Kazuyo Tada, 79, collapsed and bleeding on the kitchen floor of her second-floor apartment, located in the Tanashicho area. She had a 15-centimeter long stab wound to the left side of her neck.

Tada, who lives alone, was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital due to loss of blood stemming from the slashing of her carotid artery. She also had two stab wounds in her back.

There were no indications that the interior of the apartment had been ransacked — her purse was found to contain cash and the apartment’s key — but a glass partition between the kitchen and living room had been shattered. As well, glass fragments had been stained with blood. A weapon has not yet been located.

The neighbor made the grisly discovery after sensing a problem when Tada’s door was seen open, according to the Sankei Shimbun (Aug. 4).

Police are treating the case as murder.
