HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police are investigating a stabbing incident at a hospital in Asahikawa City that left a 90-year-old man dead, reports NHK (Aug. 4).

At just before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, police received a tip from a staff member at Moriyama Hospital about a “patient who has been stabbed.” Toranosuke Ota, a resident of Asahikawa, was confirmed dead shortly thereafter.

Police arriving at the scene arrested the man’s son, Masahiro, 59, on charges of murder. “I stabbed the old man,” the suspect is quoted by officers from the Asahikawa Chuo Police Station in admitting the allegations, according to the Sankei Shimbun (Aug. 4).

The man and his son arrived at the hospital earlier that day. After entering a treatment room on the second floor, the son stabbed his father. A nurse was also present in the room. There were no reports other injuries.

A male patient at the hospital, aged in his 50s, told NHK that he heard a scream on the second floor. “And then about five or six police officers showed up,” he said. “A patrol car also came.”
