TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of what are believed to be the bodies of the two female residents of an apartment in Machida City, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 25).

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, police received a tip from a neighbor that mail had accumulated at the residence, located in the Minaminaruse area, and its occupants were unreachable.

Officers from the Machida Police Station arriving at the scene discovered what is likely the body of a 79-year-old woman collapsed in a second-floor corridor. Another body, likely her 50-year-old daughter, was found in a similar condition in a bedroom on the same floor.

Though the causes of death have not yet been determined, police suspect that foul play was not a factor as neither body had any external wounds, and there were no signs of forced entry.

Both women were last seen together by the neighbor at the entrance of the residence on July 10.
