Tokyo cops: Skeletal remains found on Shinjuku balcony

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a corpse at a residence undergoing demolition in Shinjuku Ward, reports TBS News (July 24).

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, a member of a work crew telephoned police about “skeletal remains on a first-floor balcony.”

Police arriving at the residence, located in the Toyama area, found the body lying on the balcony with its head atop a sports bag. The body, whose gender is unknown, was clothed in a jacket and pants.

Demolition of the entire building began on July 12. The body was found just prior to the call to police.

Police are now working to identify the body.
