AICHI (TR) – Aichi Prefectural Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of two bodies, likely that of a woman and her son, at an apartment building in Nagoya, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 22).

At 4:35 p.m. on Thursday, a resident of an apartment building in the Ikeba area of Tenpaku Ward found a man collapsed along a passageway of the building. After being transported to a nearby hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, the man was confirmed dead.

Officers from the Tenpaku Police Station then entered the man’s residence nearby and were greeted with a foul smell. They then found the body of an elderly woman atop a futon in a bedroom. The woman is believed to have been dead for about one week.

Neither body had any external wounds. There were no signs that the residence had been ransacked.

A doctor determined that the man died of heatstroke. The results of an autopsy will be used to assess the cause of death of the woman.

Police believe the woman is 89 years old with the deceased man being her son, aged in his 50s, but the identities of the bodies have not yet been confirmed.

“From time to time, I saw him coming and going,” the resident is quoted in referring to the deceased man. “When I found him collapsed, he was foaming at the mouth.”
