TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested an American youth in the sale of marijuana to students from an international school at a park in Shibuya Ward, reports TV Asahi (July 21).

In April, the boy, a 19-year-old resident of Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, allegedly sold five grams of marijuana for 35,000 yen to two both, both of whom are second-year high school students, and a 17-year-old girl on a bench at the soccer field of Miyashita Park.

“I bought a car, so I sold marijuana to about 10 students to repay the loan,” the suspect is quoted by police, according to TBS News (July 21).

The suspect was also found to be in possession of 0.9 grams of marijuana at his residence.

The American told police that he purchased the drugs in the Roppongi entertainment district of Minato Ward. “I began purchasing the cannabis from a foreign acquaintance in Roppongi in January of last year,” the suspect is quoted, according to NHK (July 21). “At first, I was using but later I started selling to acquaintances.”

In brokering the transaction, the persons involved communicated via the smartphone application Snapchat, which automatically deletes the content.

Police are now investigating the other customers of the suspect.
