FUKUOKA (TR) – The Self-Defense Force is examining a grenade-like object dug up by a worker on Saturday, after residents were evacuated.

Officers from the Sawara Police Station set up a 50-meter perimeter around a factory in the Befu area of Jonan Ward, Fukuoka City, after a male worker reported unearthing a grenade-like object at around 8:30 a.m., the Sankei Shimbun reports (July 16).

A total of 20 residents were evacuated to a nearby community center, Fukuoka City officials said.

The Self-Defense Forces are investigating whether the grenade is real.

Sawara police said the grenade measures about 10 centimeters long and five centimeters wide with no visible rust on the surface, suggesting it could be new.

The man was conducting work on a driveway when he found the grenade some 20 centimeters underground.
