TOKYO (TR) – It was quite literally a boulevard of broken dreams.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Wednesday announced a crackdown on a motorcycle gang that went on a rampage earlier this year after its members failed to find love, reports the Asahi Shimbun (July 13).

In the early morning hours of February 15, a gang of eight persons on motorcycles, aged 18 and 19, allegedly meandered through traffic and ran red lights over a 1.6-kilometer stretch of road between Tokyo’s Itabashi Ward and Toda City, Saitama Prefecture.

All of the suspects, who have been charged with engaging in prohibited actions under the Road Traffic Law, admit to the allegations. “I regret not taking something like that seriously,” one suspect is quoted by police in admitting to the allegations. “I didn’t think a patrol car from Tokyo would come to Saitama,” another suspect said.

After not being able to find a companion for Valentine’s Day, the leader of the group, headed by an 18-year-old outdoor stall operator in Toda, assembled the members via the smartphone application Line under the motto “Gang of guys without girls, let’s run wild!”

According to TV Asahi (July 13), police suspect that the group has committed the same crimes on more than 10 occasions over the past two years.
