TOKYO (TR) – A man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly strangling a woman to death in Tachikawa City because she told his wife about their affair.

Tokyo police arrested Yuuki Oi, 26, on murder charges for allegedly strangling Mayuko Asai, 26, who was found dead on a bed with an electrical cord wrapped around her neck in her apartment, the Sankei Shimbun reports (July 9).

Oi, who has been charged with murder, told police he strangled Asai because she told his wife about their affair, which began about two years ago, but “didn’t mean to kill her.”

Police believe Asai was friends with Oi’s wife. Oi and his wife were at Asai’s residence in Tachikawa City on Thursday to talk after Asai confessed to Oi’s wife about the affair.

Nikkan Sports reported that Oi allegedly strangled Asai when he became alone with her after his wife returned to their car.

Oi subsequently visited the Akishima police station with his wife on Thursday at around 5 p.m.  and told officers he “might have killed” Asai. His wife called Asai but no one picked up, prompting officers from Tachikawa station to visit her residence.
