TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of the body of a woman inside her residence in Tachikawa City, reports TV Asahi (July 8).

At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, police found the body of Mayuko Asai, a 26-year-old part-time employee, lying face-up on a bed inside a bedroom of the third-floor apartment with a electrical cord wrapped around her neck. She was confirmed dead at the scene.

According to police, there were no signs of resistance on the part of the victim and the interior of the apartment had not been ransacked. According to the Sankei Shimbun (July 8), one end of the cord had been caught in the legs of the bed.

Police were alerted to the residence after an acquaintance of the victim could not contact her. Since the front door was locked, police entered via the balcony, according to Fuji News Network (July 8).

Asai lives in the residence with her mother, younger sister and three-year-old daughter, none of whom were present at the time of the discovery.

Police are treating the case as the result of foul play or suicide.
