TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 27-year-old male over the alleged mugging of a woman in Suginami Ward earlier this month, reports Nippon News Network (June 24).

On the evening of June 9, Sho Teshigahara allegedly approached the woman, aged in her 20s, from behind along a pathway next to an apartment block and covered her mouth. He then grabbed her carry bag containing a purse with 9,000 yen inside.

As  the suspect fled the scene the woman gave chase and he dropped the bag on the path before escaping.

Teshigahara, who has been charged with robbery, denies the charges, telling police he does not recall the incident.

The suspect became a person of interest for police after examining security camera footage taken near the building.
