TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have apprehended a man suspected in dozens of sexual assaults of women in Hino City and neighboring areas for allegedly attempting to steal the underwear of a primary school girl, reports TV Asahi (June 17).

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on May 5, Soshi Urano, a 41-year-old interior designer, allegedly raised the skirt of the girl, 8, as she played with classmates on a road in Hino and attempted to remove her underwear.

In committing the act, the suspect approached the girl from behind on a motorcycle and grabbed her wrist. He then forcibly rolled up her skirt and attempted to pull down her underwear. However, the girl squatted down to thwart the attack and the suspect fled the scene empty-handed.

Urano, who has been charged with attempted sexual assault, denies the charges. “I do not recall (the incident),” the suspect is quoted by police.

Police used an item left at the scene of the crime to identify Urano as a person of interest.

Police are investigating Urano’s possible involvement in 60 other similar incidents that have taken place this year in Hino and Hachioji City in which the victims were women and children, according to the Sankei Shimbun (June 16).
