TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in a stabbing incident that took place after a mishap involving an umbrella, reports the Sankei Shimbun (June 13).

At approximately 6:00 a.m. on May 30, Noriyuki Watanabe, an employee at a manga kissa lounge, is alleged to have used a knife with a 15-centimeter blade to repeatedly stab a male company employee on a road in the Hyakunincho area of Shinjuku Ward after the victim’s umbrella brushed up against him.

The victim suffered serious injuries to his chest and other areas that will require one month to heal.

Watanabe, who has been charged with attempted murder, denies the charges. “I do not remember (the incident) at all, not the quarrel, not even the stabbing,” the suspect is quoted, according to Nippon News Network (June 14).

After the altercation involving the umbrella, the suspect returned home to retrieve the weapon to carry out the stabbing.

Watanabe became a person of interest after police found his bicycle at the scene of the crime and examined security camera footage taken in the area.
