TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested two men in the theft of a safe from a real estate company in Toshima Ward, reports Nippon News Network (June 10).

At around midnight on May 1,  Asamizu, a 34-year-old employee of the office, and Reo Ogawa, a 20-year-old university student, allegedly trespassed into the office of the company, located in the Nishi Ikebukuro area, and stole a safe weighing 33 kilograms and containing 20 million yen in cash.

An examination of security camera footage taken at the office showed the suspects hauling the safe away via a taxi.

Asamizu, who has been charged with theft, denies the charges. Ogawa admits to the allegations, telling officers from the Ikebukuro Police Station that he acted under the instructions of Asamizu. “I bought a high-end wristwatch with my share of the take,” he is quoted by police, according to Nikkan Sports (June 10).

The two suspects became acquainted through previous part-time work. They gained access to the office with a pass key in Asamizu’s possession.

Following the incident, the president of the company noticed that his bag was missing. Asamizu was subsequently arrested after he was seen exiting his residence carrying the bag.
