TOKYO (TR) – Amid continuing complaints about molesters on the capital’s rail networks, Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Monday initiated a campaign at two train stations to warn about perpetrators, known by the word chikan, reports Nippon News Network (June 6).

At JR Machida Station, university cheerleaders handed out leaflets and tissue packs with messages promoting the “Chikan Extermination” campaign to morning commuters.

Also on Monday, police officers and railway officials carried out a patrol through JR Shinjuku Station as a part of the same initiative.

Last year, police received complaints from approximately 1,400 persons about problems with molesters inside train stations and carriages. In June and July of each year, the number of incidents is often especially high since women are more likely to wear lighter clothing, according to TV Asahi (June 7).

The campaign extends through June 17.
