SAITAMA (TR) – A man was arrested on Monday for flying into a rage and allegedly beating his dog to death because it barked.

Saitama Prefectural Police arrested Toshiyuki Watanabe, 47, on suspicion of violating the animal welfare law for kicking his 3-year-old male dog twice before lifting him inside his cage and slamming it to the floor because he barked in his home in Omiya Ward, Saitama City, the Sankei Shimbun reports (June 6).

Watanabe admitted to the charges, telling the Omiya Police Station he “became enraged because the dog barked.”

Police said they were alerted by Watanabe’s wife after the dog died from the alleged abuse.

An investigation is under way to determine how the dog was killed by the abuse, which police believe happened at around 8 a.m. on Friday.
