TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a corpse at an abandoned residence in Koganei City, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (May 10).

At approximately 2:10 p.m. on Monday, a male member of a clean-up crew discovered skeletal remains inside a storage shed of the residence, located in the Sakuracho area. The worker then alerted officers at a nearby police box.

The body, which measured approximately 170 centimeters in length, was attired in work clothes.

Officers from the Koganei Police Station suspect that the person had been dead for over one year. The results of an autopsy will be used to determine the cause of death.

Based on a document found nearby, the body is believed to be that of a man in his 50s, according to Sports Nippon (May 9).

Police are treating the case as the result of an accident, foul play or sickness.

The residence has been empty since October of 2014. The clean-up crew was removing cardboard boxes and beer cases when the corpse was found on the floor.
