KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a corpse inside the residence of a woman who had recently passed away in the town of Hakone, reports Nippon News Network (Mar. 25).

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, the son of Kimie Shimodate reported to police the discovery of what appeared to be an ankle protruding from a living room closet of her former residence, located in the Sengokuhara area.

Police arriving at the scene found skeletal remains wrapped in a plastic bag at the bottom of the closet. The gender of the body is not known, and it did not have any external wounds, according to Fuji News Network (Mar. 25).

On March 19, Shimodate, aged in her 60s, passed away due to an illness. She had lived in the residence by herself. At the time of the discovery, her oldest son, who lives in a different location, was sorting her belongings.

Police are treating the case as foul play, and are now seeking to identify the body.
