YAMAGUCHI (TR) – Yamaguchi Prefectural Police have launched an investigation following the discovery over the weekend of a human skull and headless body in a popular park in Yamaguchi City, reports TV Asahi (Mar. 14).

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on March 12, a male passerby discovered a skull with its jaw bone missing on the base of a stone lantern in Kozan Park.

With no other body parts in the immediate vicinity, police arriving the scene began a search of the park and found a headless skeleton in a mountainous area, about 120 meters from the lantern.

The body was attired in a blue jacket and brown pants, both of which are of a type typically worn by men. Police also found a gym bag near the corpse that contained clothes and glasses.

Police are now awaiting the results of a DNA analysis to determine if the skull and corpse belong to the same person. The case is being treated as the result of foul play.

Kozan Park is frequented by tourists. It features Ruriko-ji, a temple and five-tiered pagoda considered to be a national treasure, and the Chinryutei tea house.
