TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have accused an American musician of hitting his wife in Shibuya Ward, reports Nikkan Sports (Jan. 8).

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on January 4, Derek Short, 52, allegedly struck the head of his wife, a 42-year-old Japanese national, on a street in the Dogenzaka area after she accused him of engaging in an extra-marital affair.

Short, who has been charged with assault, has not commented on the allegations, only telling officers at the Shibuya Police Station that he would like to speak to a lawyer.

Short’s wife had suspected that he had been unfaithful over the past year. Just prior to the incident, she had been following her husband and saw him walking with another woman.

His wife suffered minor injuries that require one week to heal. Short was arrested at his home in Setagaya Ward the following day.

Short and his wife married 20 years ago. Five years later, his wife started a talent agency. He is currently on the roster of the agency.

Short, who plays the saxophone and bass guitar, regularly appears at the Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo.
