YOKOHAMA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police have arrested a 93-year-old man for strangling his wife inside a nursing home in Yokohama, reports NHK (Jan. 10).

Between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, Shokichi Akimoto allegedly strangled his wife, Makiko, who was 93, inside the room they shared at the Hanakotoba nursing facility, located in Kohoku Ward.

Akimoto, who has been charged with murder, admits to the allegations. “I strangled her head with my hands,” the suspect is quoted by police.

A staff member of the facility found the collapsed body of Makiko in the room during a routine check. She was confirmed dead at the scene by a doctor on staff at the nursing home.

The couple entered the facility at the end of December.
