Kagawa cops: Man drove car with corpse in back seat

KAGAWA (TR) – Kagawa Prefectural Police have arrested a 65-year-old man after a corpse believed to be that of his father was discovered inside his passenger vehicle, reports the Mainichi Shimbun (Jan. 6).

On Tuesday at 11:50 p.m., officers from the Takamatsu Minami Police Station discovered the body in the back seat of the car inside a parking lot in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture.

Kazuo Tani, who has been charged with abandoning a corpse, admits to the allegations. “It is my father,” the suspect is quoted by police. “He died some time ago.”

The body, which was wrapped in a blanket, had in part turned to a skeleton. Police estimate that the time of death to have been at least a few months ago.

Tani lives with his father, 80, in the Teraicho area of Takamatsu City. Earlier on Tuesday, relatives of the family had consulted with police after being unable to contact the father over an extended period.

Police are now seeking to confirm the identity of the body.
