AICHI (TR) – Aichi Prefectural Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of a 48-year-old woman who is alleged to have ignited her boyfriend after he poured a flammable liquid on himself in Kariya City, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Dec. 22).

At around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Yuri Hasebe, who manages an izakaya restaurant, is alleged to have used a cigarette lighter to set her boyfriend, aged in his 50s, on fire after he had doused himself with gasoline inside the business, which is located in the Hitotsugicho area.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he is receiving treatment for significant burns to his face and other parts of his body. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Hasebe, who has been charged with attempted murder, admits to the allegations.

Just prior to the incident, the victim, who had been out drinking, arrived at the restaurant carrying a five-liter container of gasoline. After he poured the flammable liquid on himself, the suspect then accompanied him outside and committed the alleged crime.

Police are now searching for a motive in the case.
