TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a tax office employee who once was a star long-distance runner for participating in a series of groping incidents, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Nov. 25).

On the evening of October 14, Mao Fukuyama, a 27-year-old employee at the Yokohama branch of the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau, is alleged to have come up from behind a woman in her 30s as she commuted home on a road in Shinagawa Ward and fondled her chest.

Fukuyama, who has been charged with indecent assault, admits to the allegations. “I could not control my sexual desire,” the suspect is quoted by police.

Police believe that it is highly likely that Fukuyama was behind a number of similar incidents that have taken place in the same ward since May.

Police had previously taken Fukuyama into custody on charges of trespassing and damaging property after he entered a residence through a balcony by breaking a window. During the investigation, his involvement in the indecent assault case surfaced.

While a student at Jobu University, the suspect ran in the two-day Hakone Ekiden relay race, which extends between Tokyo and Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, on three occasions.
